Considerations before a liposuction

When to have the operation?

When to have the operation? - Dr. med. Daniel Münch

People who decide on a surgical procedure, voluntarily and at their own expense, have often tried for years to get rid of the annoying fat deposits by using other methods. First attempting simpler and “gentler” methods such as fitness programs, gymnastics, massage, ointments, or dieting is understandable and commendable. Often, these measures do not produce the achievement of the desired goal. Over time, the mounting frustration lowers the barriers to undergoing an operation. This “learning process” is important and is sometimes the only way to prepare for the “unpleasantness” of a liposuction surgery with the required motivation.

Motivation is also required following the operation: sufficient exercise and a sensible diet are a part of the treatment concept, which along with the liposuction can lead to optimal results.

Can drugs save the trouble of an operation?

All weight-loss drugs have the fact in common that a targeted fat deposit reduction in problem areas is not likely. In certain cases, I consider the use of weight-loss drugs in conjunction with a liposculpture operation as useful—naturally only in conjunction with a diet change and increased exercise.

Amphetamine-like appetite suppressants are not considered because of the danger of addiction and their side effects, and have largely disappeared from the market.

Xenical reduces fat absorption in the intestines and forces patients to comply with a strict fat reduced diet because of unpleasant side effects (bloating, the urge to have a bowel movement, etc.). If a fat reduced diet has already been adopted, further weight loss is unlikely. Targeted fat reduction in problem areas is also not possible with Xenical. After discontinuation of the not inexpensive therapy (the monthly costs are over CHF 200.-), a recurring weight gain is to be expected.

Drugs

Drugs can support weight reduction. However, diet-resistant fat deposits usually remain unaffected.
